Us indie developers spend a lot of time and hard work not only developing our games but also getting people to play our games. Personally Reddit has always been a great source of gamer’s and a great way to get the right people to see and play or even buy your games. Actually I’ve had a great experience over the years and even had some great support from moderators on sub reddits.
Though unfortunately I recently shared a few of my free online games from the the play arcade. With a great response actually, including some great comments from gamer’s. When I say a few, I made 4 posts. Over a period of a week or two, all unique post’s of 4 different games. A few days ago I decided to add the latest and newest game. Within minutes I received this message:
Note from the moderators:
Hope the spam was worth your three-year account. …Or whatever you paid for it.
If you have a question regarding your ban, you can contact the moderator team for /r/gaming by replying to this message.
Reminder from the Reddit staff: If you use another account to circumvent this subreddit ban, that will be considered a violation of the Content Policy and can result in your account being suspended from the site as a whole.
Despite other sub reddit moderators in the past talking to me about self-promotion rules. There is a grey area for indie developers. Some sub reddit’s allow for us indie developers to post our games. Apparently though /r/gaming does not allow for us. Actually they decide to insult you and ban you without warning.
So I messaged back:
Sorry, how was this classed as spam? Was this not the gaming subreddit?
Not sure why you would ban me to be honest. A warning that you don’t allow indie games would have been fine. I haven’t been here for 3 years because I post spam. Actually the fact you class my games as spam is enough of an insult to be honest.
Keep in mind at this point I wasn’t too happy:
Quick enough to ban me but not prepared to message me back? You even looked at the posts i make on reddit?
I sent those messages in a quick succession. The next day I receive:
I have looked at the posts you make on reddit.
They’re almost exclusively your own games. Reddit is an active community, not a tool for your business.
So I replied:
I personally thought Reddit was a platform to share your creativity. It’s a real shame to be honest. I barely cover the financial cost’s of my game development which is entirely done in my free time. I of coarse wish It could be a business (a dream job) but in reality I have spent years of my free time to bring to the world my games. Would you not share your game’s on the gaming sub reddit if you was a game developer? Honestly?
Now what really does get to me though, is you banning me an indie developer from a sub reddit about the subject I posted about. Though your perfectly happy for the gaming subreddit to market, influence and benefit the corporate world of the gaming industry. Though “the little guy” people like me, who have a voice. Is not allowed here. Actually worse then this. I’m banned without warning and “presumed” my account is brought. This is what really got to me the most. If you had said you didn’t want me to post my games here then I would have stopped. It’s obvious you DO NOT support indie developers in any shape or form, actually I’ll go as far as saying you are against us entirely. After 10 years of game development, I’ve participated in quite a few game development community’s. I’ll pass this message on. That’ll be a LOT of indie’s you wont need to ban…
Thanks for all you do for the gaming community someguyinahat.
So don’t make the same mistake as I did. Not all sub reddits support indie game dev’s, there’s a lot that does. Though I recommend not posting your games in /r/gaming!
